This was a brilliant event to end another grand year for SOSCC, with fifteen drivers all giving it some beans round the 12 tests Wullie Keaning had set up for us. Thanks to Knavesmire, we had the full run of the runway yet again and this time we stuck to the clean end, where proper tar testing could be done, although it was noticeable that the rear wheel drive cars were struggling a bit, due to the fact the slightly greasy conditions were stopping them turning in on the tighter bits.

As is now the tradition with our end of year bash, several members had decorated themselves, their car, or both and while Tony Currie was resplendent in his ‘Family Guy’ Pyjamas, the ‘Mad Mental McLaughlins’, Gemma and Simon, outdid themselves with very authentic Oompa Loompa get-ups including the orange faces. Shirley and Graham Currie on the other hand had the best decorated car with Frosty the Snowman doing his best to lean in to the corners and only just managing to stay intact, despite the unusually mild and ocassionally sunny day. All the way from Maryport, Stephen and Jack Palmer did a bit of decorating to their Fiesta and Stephen also entered into the spirit, wearing a Christmas hat throughout the day.

This was also a big day for charity, as we completed the official hand-over of no less than £500 to three different charities. First to benefit were Marie Curie Cancer Care, when local ambassador for the cause, Sheena Gibson, came along to collect £200 that we had raised all the way back at last year’s Christmas Charity Autotest. The originally planned handover had been called off but we are sure the Marie Curie fundraisers will be delighted with the cash, which Sheena tells me will pay for 20 hours of care for needy cancer patients.

Next to be handed over was £150 raised at our Guid Nychburris Autotest in June and Gordon Clendinning was delighted to thank all the competitors at that event for the contribution toward Leukemia Research. His particuar long-term efforts and commitment to raising cash for this worthy cause is now into the thousands and we know the cash we raised will be put to good use.

Finally, once we had tallied up all the additional cash handed over at signing on by all of the above pictured competitors, plus Stephen & Chris Kemp and Kelsey Gillespie who weren’t even competing, a grand total of £150 was presented to Bob Sloan who received the cash on behalf of the Heathhall Air Museum. (The museum recently donated a portacabin to SOSCC, so we were happy reciprocate).

Congratulations to all members who have donated to any of these worthy causes. It just proves that while motor sport may appear a little anti-social to some folk, we are far from it!. Having fun while raising cash for worthy causes is now second nature to us.

Thanks to Wullie Keaning for Organising and being Clerk of the Course. Thanks also to Donald Carruthers, Derek Kirkpatrick and Kelsey Gillespie for marshalling and to Thelma Proudlock for results.                                                                     Roly P.
